Dip strips,

  • quick but not very accurate.
  • can show a false reading if they are left too long.
  • can be expensive per test.

What is water quality?

It is all about the environment that your fish live in.

We breathe air and when we have clean air we feel invigorated and healthy. If we are in fumes and toxins in the air we can feel wheezy, headachy, lethargic and stressed, it can make you feel unwell.

The same happens to the fish in your pond but they use water to breathe. They get oxygen from the water through thier gills.

If the water in you pond is 'sick'. it has toxins in it.
Your fish will feel unwell, they will sulk with their fins clamped to thier body, they may jump because the water is irritating their skin or in severe cases the toxins can burn into the fishes skin.

They may gasp at the surface because they cannot get enough oxygen from the water because of gill damage.

Your fish may also collect at the return pipe from your filter where the cleaner water is returning to the pond, this is because this is the cleanest water in the pond and the fish find it easier to draw oxygen from.
