Quarantine Procedure

Here at Cedar Lodge Koi we follow a strict regime to avoid disease in all of our koi.

With the rise in incidence of Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) in the past few years, we have taken a strong line to be certain that the koi we sell have the lowest possible chance of being infected with KHV which in turn offers peace of mind to you our clients.

Here is how we recommend that you should quarantine your koi.

The procedure we follow is:

  • You should have a separate tank and filtration away from your main pond (so no cross contamination can take place) you should have separate nets, bowls and koi handling equipment.
  • When you take your new koi home, the first thing to consider is temperature acclimatisation for an hour by floating the bags in the host tank.
  • The koi should then released from their bag into a bowl and tank water is slowly introduced to the bowl. This not only allows the koi to the altered water conditions but also allows them to ‘dump’ their accumulated ammonia. They are slowly water changed in the bowl over an hour and then taken out of the bowl and released into their quarantine tank.
  • The koi should be systematically screened for parasites over the next three weeks and treat accordingly.
  • After 3 weeks of being held at temperatures of at least 23°C you need to cool the tank down to 15°C. This is done to stress the koi and initiate the KHV if it is present. The most common response is an outbreak of White Spot which you should treat immediately.
  • The temperatures are allowed to rise again (to at least 23°C) and after another 3 weeks the koi are considered clean.

This is the shortest period of quarantine we recommend, if you add any other koi to the tank during the quarantine period then you should recommence the six week period for all of the koi present in the tank.

Throughout this quarantine period feed the koi, on a high quality diet except when they are being medicated.
